Introduction

In recent years car mobility has increased tremendously. It is expected that it will continue to grow in the years to come. As a result of this the number of tail backs on motorways will not only grow but we will also see a growing shortage of parking lots, especially in the inner cities. At ground level the lack of available space is evident and consequently the number of underground expensive parking facilities is inevitable.

Research showed that over 40% of all car journeys are shorter than 5 kilometres. These short distances can also easily be covered by bike. The frequent use of a bike is not only healthier but it also improves the quality of the air and it saves space.

Research by CROW made clear that the theft of bikes in the Netherlands seriously frustrates the motivation of people to use their bikes. No less than 30% of all people said that the fear of theft frequently prevents them from using their bikes, some never make use of a bike because of this. 25% of the people whose bikes were stolen said that this was the main reason for not cycling as much any more as they did before. Consequently a large number of municipalities have decided to set up more secured cycle parks.

The costs for secured cycle parking spaces are high. As a result these parking spaces are only lucrative if they can hold a large number of bicycles and if they are sufficiently used. However, the number of suitable locations for such parking spaces are few. Solutions at a smaller scale are required at most locations for parking areas for bikes. The challenge is to offer as many save parking solutions as possible and at the same time control the cost.

What is Lock'n'Go?

Lock’n’Go is an innovative parking concept against theft of bikes that by means of a subsidised scheme in the city of Eindhoven (the Netherlands), has proven to meet the need people have in this field. It not only offers the safety of a secured cycle parking space but it is as convenient as a traditional parking space as well.

The Lock’n’Go concept is typified by safety against theft, convenience, availability (24x7) and a parking facility close to one’s destination. Through this Lock’n’Go advances mobility by bike. The lack of these aspects are usually the very reasons for people not to use their bikes anymore.

In a Lock’n’Go bicycle parking the frame of the bike is secured with a lock. This lock can be activated and deactivated by its user with a Mifare pass. It is also possible to use local passes that are already in use provided they use the Mifare principal. The validity of the pass can be defined within one or more Lock’n’Go parkings, both local and nationwide.

Because Lock’n’Go bicycle parkings are constructed in modules it is very easy to spread them over a city or a given area. Based on experience it is known that cyclists are willing to pay for the use of Lock’n’Go parkings, which makes it possible to make them cost efficient. Lock’n’Go’s strength is that the parkings can easily be expanded without a substantial increase in cost. This makes it possible to provide a town with a sufficient number of parkings in all relevant spots within a short period of time.
